How to test a crystal bowl
- Place the bowl on its rubber ring on a flat surface, away from fans and open windows.
- Press Start Listening and allow the microphone.
- Rim the bowl slowly with a suede or rubber mallet, or strike it once softly, 30–50 cm from the microphone. Crystal bowls are loud; too close can distort the reading.
- Read the verdict once the reading is stable. Within ±10 cents counts as 440 Hz tuned.
- Save the reading with the bowl's size or SKU to build a list for your shop or practice.
FAQ
How do I check if a crystal bowl is tuned to 440 Hz?
Press Start Listening and play the bowl near the microphone. When the reading is stable, the verdict line tells you whether the bowl falls within ±10 cents of a 440 Hz note. Crystal bowls give a very pure tone, so readings settle quickly.
Why is my "440 Hz" bowl not exactly on the note?
Crystal bowls are tuned at the factory, but the pitch can shift slightly with temperature, the mallet, the surface the bowl sits on, and water inside the bowl. A few cents either way is normal; more than about 15 cents suggests a different tuning.
How far apart are 440 Hz and 432 Hz tuning?
About 31.8 cents, roughly a third of a semitone. A bowl can only sit close to one of them for the same note name, which is why the tuner can tell them apart.
Which octave are crystal bowls?
Most frosted crystal bowls from 8 to 14 inches sound in the 4th octave; larger 16 to 24 inch bowls sound in the 3rd octave. The tuner shows the octave number next to the note.
