How to tune a cello
- Press Start Tuning and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
- Play one note. Pluck a single string or play one key, close to the microphone, and let it ring.
- Read the display. The big letter is the nearest note. The bar shows how far off you are: left is flat (tune up), right is sharp (tune down).
- Turn until it goes green. Inside your tolerance (±3 cents by default) the display turns green and the string gets a check mark.
Tips
- Tune A first, then D, G and C.
- Low C is around 65 Hz. Use a full bow and let the note bloom before reading it.
FAQ
What notes are cello strings?
C2 G2 D3 A3.
Why is my cello reading the wrong octave?
Strong overtones can sometimes dominate. The tuner targets the nearest string, so the needle still points the right way; lock the string if you want to be sure.
