How to tune a violin

  1. Press Start Tuning and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  2. Play one note. Pluck a single string or play one key, close to the microphone, and let it ring.
  3. Read the display. The big letter is the nearest note. The bar shows how far off you are: left is flat (tune up), right is sharp (tune down).
  4. Turn until it goes green. Inside your tolerance (±3 cents by default) the display turns green and the string gets a check mark.

Tips

  • Start with the A string, then tune D, G and E. Most violinists use the fine tuners for small changes.
  • Bow long, even strokes while you tune. Pizzicato readings fade quickly.
  • If a peg slips, push it gently into the pegbox while turning so it grips.

FAQ

What notes are violin strings?

G3, D4, A4 and E5. Each string is a perfect fifth above the one before it.

Should I tune to 440 or 442?

A = 440 Hz is the international standard. Many orchestras in Europe use 442 or 443 Hz. Set the reference to match your ensemble.

Fine tuners or pegs?

Use the pegs for large changes, for example after changing a string, and the fine tuners for the last few cents.
