How to tune a bass
- Press Start Tuning and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
- Play one note. Pluck a single string or play one key, close to the microphone, and let it ring.
- Read the display. The big letter is the nearest note. The bar shows how far off you are: left is flat (tune up), right is sharp (tune down).
- Turn until it goes green. Inside your tolerance (±3 cents by default) the display turns green and the string gets a check mark.
Tips
- Low notes take longer to read. Pluck firmly, then let the string ring for a second before you turn the peg.
- Play the 12th-fret harmonic if the open string wobbles. The harmonic is one octave higher and gives a cleaner reading.
- Phone and laptop microphones pick up little below 50 Hz. Hold the device close to the body of the bass or use an amp.
FAQ
What are the notes on a bass guitar?
Standard 4-string bass tuning is E1 A1 D2 G2, the same note names as the four lowest guitar strings but one octave lower.
Can this tuner read a 5-string low B?
Yes. Low B is about 30.9 Hz. The tuner can detect it, though small speakers and microphones may need you to play a harmonic for a stable reading.
Should I tune my bass with harmonics?
Harmonics at the 12th fret are easier for microphones to hear. Fine-tune with the open string afterwards to check.
